Raising Curious Kids in a Convenience-Focused World

Why 'I don’t know—let’s find out' might be your parenting superpower

We live in a world where everything is one swipe away. Dinner? Ordered. Answers? Googled. Entertainment? Streaming 24/7.

But you know what’s harder to find? Curiosity. Slowness. The kind of wonder that takes root when things aren’t instant.

I’m convinced our kids were born with it—this wide-eyed hunger to ask why and how and what happens if…But in a culture that rewards convenience, even I find myself cutting it short sometimes. "Because I said so." "That’s just the way it is." "Let’s just move on."

Oof.

Lately, though, I’ve been trying to pause. To say, “I don’t know—let’s find out.” To make room for wondering together. And sometimes that means we spend 10 minutes watching a worm cross the sidewalk or googling how astronauts use the bathroom in space.(It’s weird. You’ve been warned.)

And honestly? Those are the moments that stick.

Because here’s the thing: God wired our kids for curiosity. He filled creation with clues and questions—hidden treasures in stars and slugs and everything in between. When we say yes to exploring—even when we don’t have all the answers—we’re helping them see that learning isn’t about getting it “right”… it’s about staying open, engaged, and in awe of a God who’s always teaching.

So this week, I’m giving myself permission to wonder. To take the long way. To sit in the unknown. And to model curiosity instead of control.

Because “I don’t know” is a beautiful place to begin.

But let’s be real for a second: Wonder takes work.

It’s not always neat. It doesn’t fit perfectly into our daily rhythms. And most days, my brain is stretched between feeding people, keeping up with laundry, and reminding one particular child that underwear is not optional. 🙃

So no—cultivating curiosity doesn’t mean you need to plan elaborate Pinterest crafts or deep-dive into worm anatomy (unless that’s your thing, and in that case… Godspeed).Sometimes it’s just about asking a follow-up question. Taking a breath before dismissing an interruption. Or handing your child a magnifying glass and saying, “Go see what you can discover.”

Because in the end, I don’t want my kids to think knowledge lives in a tablet or Alexa. I want them to believe it lives in them. In their questions. In their observations. In the quiet nudges of the Holy Spirit when something sparks awe and they can’t explain why.

And if you’re feeling too tired, too stretched, or too unsure to lead your child through “learning” this summer—friend, same.

That’s exactly why I created Curiosity Camp.

You don’t have to be a teacher. You don’t need a fancy science kit. You just need a little time, a little space, and a heart willing to say, “Let’s wonder together.”

This week, we’re blasting off with our Space Voyagers Adventure Trail—a hands-on, joy-filled resource that invites kids to explore stars, rockets, gravity, and God’s powerful creativity in it all. It’s developmentally appropriate. It’s deeply fun. It’s faith-filled. And it’s made for families like ours.

So go ahead. Watch the worm. Ask the question. Chase the “what if.” And let your child see that curiosity isn’t just something for kids—it’s something that can live in us, too.

Because when we slow down and wonder, we meet the God who made this wild, beautiful world. And He’s never in a rush.
