Build It, Break It, Fix It is a hands-on learning experience that invites children to explore, experiment, and problem-solve through building. Children are natural engineers — they stack, connect, test, rebuild, and try again, not to get it “right,” but to see what happens.
This February Wonder Year unit is designed to honor that curiosity by giving children the freedom to build, break, and fix through open-ended, play-based exploration. Rather than focusing on a finished product, the emphasis is on the process — noticing what works, what doesn’t, and what changes when they try again.
Throughout the unit, children are encouraged to:
build using a variety of materials
observe what happens when structures fall or fail
adjust, rebuild, and test new ideas
develop perseverance, creativity, and confidence
Activities are intentionally flexible and can be completed with everyday materials you already have at home or in the classroom. Families can enjoy one activity at a time or stretch learning across several days — following the child’s lead and curiosity along the way.
This unit also includes:
simple, printable activity pages
reflection prompts that support thinking and observation
a family devotional centered on growth, effort, and learning through trial and error
optional Bonus STEAM Build Cards for extended open-ended play
Each page is designed to be low-prep, printer-friendly, and developmentally appropriate — making learning feel joyful, meaningful, and doable.
